In 1999 my mum had to have a liver transplant and as a family we always knew that the anti-liver rejections tablets would cause kidney damage and ultimately she would need a kidney transplant. In April 2016 mum’s kidney function deteriorated and it was then my parents approach my brother and I and gave it to us straight that Mum wasn’t well at all and would we want to help her to see if we could be matches for kidney donation. With no hesitation my brother and I were more than happy to help and both of us got tested, we were both matches! The next 3 months we heard when mum had to be driven by my dad 3 times a week to the Churchill Hospital in Oxford to have dialysis treatment 3 times a week, she was so tired and she could do nothing but sleep.
We went ahead with the operation and I had key hole surgery, I was in hospital for 3 days and back at work in 3.5 weeks. The kidney worked straight away for mum, within 6 months she went to Australia for 8 weeks and is like a new woman.
You never know when you need organ donation, we’ve had a blessing from a donor and I have been able to help my mum. I have also have registered on the donor list as I want to give back when I’m gone. Sharing is caring!
